Like reading-aloud, a library is ...  "not about teaching a child how  to read; it's about teaching a child to want to read" - Jim Trelease, The Read-Aloud Handbook.

    Iowa Children's Choice Award Books

Students in 3rd - 6th grade can vote on their favorite book from this list if they have read, or heard read aloud, at least two of the books. Voting will take place in February. We will send the results for Alan Shepard to the state committee that will tally the votes from schools all across the state of Iowa. The winner will be announced in the spring.

    Battle of the Books

This is a voluntary activity for 4th - 6th grades that involves reading the Iowa Children's Choice Award books. In the fall, students that choose to participate, form their own teams of three students. They decide who on their team will read which titles from the ICCA book list. During January and February, the teams battle during recess time. Each team is asked questions that begin with, "In which book...?" Points are given for correct answers. Each team battles three different times. After all battles are complete, the team with highest number of points will compete in the North Scott District Battle at Scott County Library in early March. See Mrs. Youngbauer if you have any questions.
